Anglo-Saxon Bronze Zoomorphic Strap End With Niello Inlay

Item Description

C. 9th century

A nice cast bronze strap end of Thomas’ Class A, Type 1,  with incised detail and a zoomorphic terminal. The central panel is decorated in the ‘Trewhiddle’ style, featuring a mystical creature with niello inlay, within a border of circular indentations. There are two rivet holes for attachments, which would have encased materials such as leather and secured in place with rivets.

Although the lower plate is missing, it has good detail with niello inlay still remaining.
