British Bronze Age Socketed Axe Head. Glossy Patina

C. 2nd millennium BC
A cast bronze socketed axe head decorated with three horizontal ribs to either side of the rectangular body. It has a slightly curved expanding cutting edge, and a lateral hoop just below the mouth. It was moulded hollow, as the wooden half would have been inserted inside the socket.
Nice dark brown, glossy patina and a nice example.
Provenance: Found East Anglia, UK. Acquired in Oxon, UK. From the private collection of Kenneth Machin (1936-2000), Buckinghamshire, UK; with collection no.BA17; his collection of antiquities and natural history was formed since 1948; thence by descent.
