British Bronze Age Socketed Axe Head

C. 800-600 BC

A cast bronze socketed axe head decorated with three horizontal ribs to either side of the rectangular body. It has a slightly curved expanding cutting edge, and a lateral hoop just below the mouth. It was moulded hollow, as the wooden half would have been inserted inside the socket.

Slightly chipped with some light earthy surfaces deposits and in good condition.

Provenance: Ex J. L. Collection, collected in the 1990’s.
