Byzantine Terracotta Oil Lamp Decorated With Birds
C. 7th-10th century AD
A Byzantine oil lamp with a pointed handle and decorated with four birds to shoulders and a maker’s mark to base of an eight-spoked wheel. The lamp has a large filling hole, surrounded by a ridge, a channel, and a second ridge extending down to the wick hole which is decorated with three pellets.
Intact with chip to handle and to base of glaze otherwise good detail and an interesting piece.
