Celtic-Romano Bronze Enamelled Seal Box Lid

Item Description

C. 2nd century AD

This rectangular enamelled box lid, decorated with an enamel geometric pattern, with traces of blue enamel, and green enamel to the surrounding area. There are four globules in total, one of each protruding from each corner of the box.

These would have been used during the transportation of written messages or packages. The base of the box would have been fixed to the package by either nails or of a cord, which would have been passed through four holes in the bottom. A small slot cut out from each side of the base, would allow for another piece of cord to pass through and then placed around the item to be secured. Then the cord was tied in a knot within the box itself, where a wax stamp made with a seal would hold it in place. Once complete, it would have made it impossible to open the item or remove the cord without breaking the seal.

Nice detail with a good amount of enamel still remaining.

Found Gloucestershire.
