Egyptian Faience Amulet of Taweret
Item Description
C. 664 – 332 BC – Late Period
A nice pale blue faience Egyptian amulet of the goddess Taweret or Taurt, depicted as a heavily pregnant hippopotamus whose name means, “The great one”. She stands on an oblong base with her arms by her side and her left leg advanced. She has the body of a hippopotamus, limbs of a feline, most probably a lion and the usual long crocodile tail hanging down her back. It has nice incised detail and suspension loop to the back.
Chip to base and minor nicks to glaze, otherwise nice detail and pale blue glaze.
