Egyptian Faience Eye of Horus Amulet

Item Description

C. 1550 BC – 664 BC – Third Intermediate Period to Late Period

A pale green glazed Eye of Horus amulet pierced longitudinally for suspension. One side of the amulet is features the pupil and brow in black high relief.

The Eye of Horus amulet is also known as Uzat or ‘Wedjat’, meaning “Whole One”. It is a symbol of protection and was used to deflect evil, as well as believed to have healing powers. The Uzat eye’s represent the two eye’s of Horus as he was a sun and moon deity therefore, his right eye was the sun, and the left was the moon.

Small chip to both ends of suspension loop hole otherwise intact and nice detail.

Provenance: Thomas Allworthy (died 1973) thence by decent to the last owner. Allworthy was a collector of antiquity who sold a small number of pieces at Sotheby’s 19th May 1956.
