Egyptian Third Intermediate Period Blue Faience Shabti With Hieroglyphs
Item Description
C. 945-712 BC – 22nd Dynasty, Third Intermediate Period
A pale blue faience shabti, wearing a tripartite wig with a thick fillet rendered in black pigment across the forehead and tied at the back. There are black painted hieroglyphs running down the front of his body, and he holds a hoe in one hand, and a seed basket over the other shoulder, both rendered in black pigment.
Shabtis were mummiform funerary figurines, which were placed in ancient Egyptian tombs to act as servants for the deceased in the afterlife. These ‘worker’ Shabtis were often depicted holding tools like hoes and picks for tasks such as farming.
