Egyptian Ossein Double Sided Plaque of Bes & A Wedjat Eye
Item Description
C. 713-332 BC – Late Period
A finely carved ossein, double sided rectangular plaque, featuring the dwarf god Bes on one side and the wedjat-eye on the other. Bes is depicted in a squat position with his legs slightly bent and his hands resting on his hips, wearing a tall headdress of plumes consisting of ostrich feathers.
The Eye of Horus amulet is also known as Uzat or ‘Wedjat’, meaning “Whole One”. It is a symbol of protection and was used to deflect evil, as well as believed to have healing powers. The Uzat eye’s represent the two eye’s of Horus as he was a sun and moon deity therefore, his right eye was the sun, and the left was the moon.
There is a groove running along the centre of the outer edge, and pierced though the side for suspension.
Minor chips to edge with fine carvings.
Provenance: Ex N. Thomas Collection, collected in the 1980’s to 1990’s.
