Greek Terracotta Gnathian Trefoil Oinochoe

Item Description

C. 4th century BC

A black metallic glazed oinochoe with a single handle, trefoil lip and a bulbous body. It is decorated with pale orange bands around the neck  and depicts grape vines and trendil motifs below.

The name Gnathian ware comes from the city of Gnathia which it is named after.

Small chips to trefoil lip otherwise in very good condition and intact with good strong colour.

Provenance: Ex English Collection from 1980’s-90’s. Purchased in provincial auction, 2021.
