Large Byzantine Bronze Double Sided Reliquary Cross

Item Description

C. 12th-14th century AD

An excellent example of a large double sided bronze cross engraved with the Virgin Orans (Virgin Mary), dressed in a long robe with hands upraising in prayer, with legend around her. On the ends of the arms are medallions with busts of the four saints possibly holding their gospels. The other half depicts the crucifixion of Christ, with surrounding legend, flanked by medallions with busts, with access to a hollow space meant for holding a religious relic. The two halves of the reliquary were joined by a hinge and were meant to be worn on a chain.

One hinge at is bottom is missing otherwise an interesting piece with a nice dark patina and nice detail.
