Large Egyptian Blue Glazed Faience Amulet of Tawaret

Item Description

C. 713-332 BC – Late period

A large blue glazed faience amulet of Egyptian goddess Taurt or Tawaret, depicted as a heavily pregnant hippopotamus whose name means, “The great one”. She stands on an oblong base with her arms by her side and her left leg advanced. She has the body of a hippopotamus, limbs of a feline, most probably a lion and the usual long crocodile tail hanging down her back. It has nice incised detail and suspension loop to the back.

Although hand is missing and with some pitted surfaces, it is intact and in good condition.
