Medieval Bronze Openwork Dagger Chape
Item Description
C. 13th-14th century
A nice bronze openwork dagger chape or scabbard chape, decorated with three fleur-de-lys cut outs and three rectangular vertical bars to the centre. These metal fittings attached to the end of a daggers scabbard, to protect the edges and tips of the blade, of either swords or daggers depending on the size. These serve both functional and decorative purposes, and the use of bronze allowed for fine detailing.
Slightly chipped the reverse otherwise in good condition with nice detail.
Provenance: Graham Slater collection, Cambridge, collected in the 1980’s-1990’s.
Size: H: 41mm x W: 33mm
