Polished Spiral Goniatite Dish From Morocco
Item Description
Devonian Period – C. 400 Million Years Old
Order to which the fossil belongs: Goniatida
Location: Morocco.
A beautifully carved and polished, black marble Goniatite fossil dish.
Goniatites are Ammonoid Cephalopods that form the order Goniatida, and belongs to the squidlike class, Cephalopoda. They survived the Late Devonian period and were abundant in the world seas for the following 370 million years, after which they suddenly vanished at the end of the Cretaceous period. The shape of its shell suggests that Goniatites were poor swimmers.
An attractive piece.
