C. 2100 BC – Sumerian cuneiform clay tablet from the Ur III period

Inscribed clay cuneiform tablet with script to all sides but one. Sumerian cuneiform is known as the earliest writing system, developed from pictographs and other various symbols, which were used to represent livestock and trade goods onto clay tablets. Sumerian was spoken in the southern region of ancient Mesopotamia in Sumer.

Although a fragment it has good clear text remaining and is VERY RARE.

Provenance: Estate of a deceased gentleman. Collected before 1988 and by decent to his family and kept in London.
