Roman Bronze Enamelled Lozenge Shape Plate Brooch

Item Description

C. 2nd century AD

A nice example of a Roman bronze lozenge-shaped plate brooch, decorated with twelve panels of alternating blue and white enamel, to the central discoid body. It also features two triangular sections with orange enamel and eight circular lobes around the perimeter of the brooch, incised with concentric circles.

Although centre and pin missing with small chip to one peripheral lobe, this is a nice example with the majority of enamel still remaining and of a nice style.

Ref: Similar example in the Celtic & Roman Artefacts by n. Mills, page. 52.

Provenance: Ex Northamptonshire Collection.
