Roman Bronze Zoomorphic Enamelled Bird Brooch
Item Description
C. 2nd century AD
A bronze zoomorphic brooch in the form of a bird in flight, with a flat body and spread wings. The wings and tail feathers each contain triangular cells of dark green enamel. The bird’s back is decorated with crescent shaped punch marks indicating the feathers.
In ancient Greece and in the Roman empire, brooches and fibulae would have been used to fasten garments, like togae or cloaks.
Although pin is missing, it is finely decorated with a good amount of enamel remaining.
