Roman North African Terracotta Oil Lamp Depicting Chi-Rho
Item Description
C. 4th-5th century AD
An interesting oil lamp, depicting a decorated Chi-Rho to central discus with a geometric pattern to the shoulders. It has a lug handle to rear with concentric circles to base. The Chi-Rho Christogram is a religious symbol used as decoration, and is a monogram for Christ’s name, thought to offer protection for the lamp’s owner.
Although repaired and cracked it has good detail, with some earthy surface deposits.
