Roman Samian Ware Pottery Dish With Maker’s Mark

Item Description

C. 1st-2nd Century AD

A nice example of a terra sigillata or samian ware dish with an orange/red slip, decorated with incised concentric bands to the interior. It features a sandal maker’s mark to the centre but the stamped maker’s mark inscription is unclear. It sits on a small ring foot with impressed sandal maker’s mark to centre.

Although the rim is chipped it is a nice example with good detail and colour.

Provenance: Deceased Estate of an East Anglian school teacher who later retired to the Isle of Wight. A keen collector and antiquarian who amassed a collection between the 1960’s-1980’s.
