Roman Samian Ware Pottery Dish With Maker’s Mark
Item Description
C. 1st-2nd Century AD
A nice example of a terra sigillata or samian ware dish with an orange/red slip, decorated with incised concentric bands to the interior. It features an impressed sandal maker’s mark to the centre, but the stamped maker’s mark inscription is unclear. It also sits on a small ring foot.
Although the rim is chipped it is a nice example with good detail and colour.
Provenance: Deceased Estate of an East Anglian school teacher who later retired to the Isle of Wight. A keen collector and antiquarian who amassed a collection between the 1960’s-1980’s.
