Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp With Maker’s Mark

Item Description

C. 1st-2nd century AD

A nice example of a Roman oil lamp with a pierced, loop handle to the back, and a rounded nozzle which is separated from the discus by a horizontal line, flanked by two dots. There is a makers mark to base but is not clear, it could possibly be, “LDOMITIS”.

Minor chips to shoulders otherwise intact with a clear maker’s mark.

Provenance: Ex Museum Ludwig, Cologne. From the collection of Arno Jumpertz, Leverkusen, Germany. 1924-84. Much of his collection was exhibited at Neus Museum, 1985.
