C. 1st-2nd century AD

Large polychrome double sided faience amulet of the dwarf deity Bes, wearing a large feathered headdress. Bes is depicted in a squat position with his legs slightly bent and his hands resting on his hips. The Egyptian dwarf deity was worshipped as a protector of households; and in particular; of mothers and children and childbirth. Bes later came to be regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad

Intact with some earthy surface deposits and good detail.

Provenance: Ex J. Waring Collection, collected in the 1980’s onwards.
