Zoomorphic Medieval Bronze Strap Fitting
C, 11th-12th century
An interesting bronze strap fitting comprising of two main components which have been joined together. Once element consists of an oval-sectioned bar with a rectangular frame at its outer end and a moulded zoomorphic head at the opposite end, below a circular-sectioned ‘sleeve’ with deeply moulded grooves and ridges. The second component is another bar also consisting of a rectangular frame at one end, which has been threaded through the sleeve, with a moulded baluster-shaped ‘stop’ at the other end. This strap fitting would probably be for a horse harness.
In good condition with some earthy surface deposits and good detail.
