Greek Apulian Terracotta Guttus With Head of Medusa

Item Description

C. 3rd century BC

A nice example of a brown/black glazed pottery guttus with a single loop handle at a right angle to the high angled spout and out turned rim decorated with incised bands. Decorated with the head of Medusa on the upper centre of the reservoir and surrounded by incised concentric circles. A guttus was used to store precious oil to fill oil lamps.

Small chip to spout with some earthy surface deposits otherwise good detail, strong colour and an excellent example.
