Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp With Actors Mask & Maker’s Mark
C. 1st-2nd century AD
A nice example of a Roman oil lamp decorated with a theatrical mask of a young woman, with ribbed hair and long strands framing the face. The mask is framed with two concentric circles and ovolo decoration to shoulders. It has a pierced, loop handle to the back with incised linear patterns, and a rounded nozzle which is separated from the discus by a horizontal line, flanked by two dots. There is a makers mark to base which reads, “CIVNDRAC”.
In excellent condition with fine detail and clear makers mark.
